What is Distributed Learning?DESK is one of the distributed learning schools in BC under the direction of the BC Ministry of Education. Programs offered at DESK consist of courses that have been developed at the provincial level by BC Open School and locally developed special interest courses. All courses are augmented by direct teacher input, and teachers, counselors, and support staff work together to guide students through their studies at DESK. Distributed learning, once exclusively print, is moving rapidly online. DESK continues to offer some full print programs K–12, however, more and more teachers are supporting student learning through the use of Web-based synchronous and asynchronous activities such as one on one or group support, online lessons and a myriad of other innovative events and strategies. At DESK, many courses are fully online—the content, resources and communication between teachers and students, as well as among students, are all delivered over the web by way of our Desire to Learn (D2L) student management program. Parents and students are encouraged to consider the online opportunities as their first or preferred choice. The technology allows us to build communities of students learning together, sharing knowledge and understanding, and brings the teacher and a world of resources just a click away.
